Job Summary:

The Associate Counsel provides corporate commercial legal advice and support for various activities among the various Zebra business units and functions in the APAC region, including those operating in Japan, South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand). He/She may be required to work on global projects as well as projects in the region or assist other counsels on matters in Australia/New Zealand and India/Sri Lanka or other countries in APAC.


This position may be based out of (Japan / Singapore / Malaysia) and reports to the VP, APAC General Counsel who is based in Singapore.


This is primarily a generalist / corporate commercial role with opportunities for regional specialization into specific areas including but not limited to anti-trust, privacy, labor etc. The role will be responsible for understanding business goals; structuring deals to meet those goals while adhering to Zebra’s company policies; conceiving and drafting contracts reflecting agreed-to deal structures; negotiating contracts to execution against opposing counsel / management representing customers, vendors / suppliers; and counseling on the enforcement of contract claims for and against Zebra.

A strong team-player with driven intellectual curiosity and a proactive approach who can work fairly autonomously. Must be willing to absorb information and develop new legal skills and areas of expertise quickly, in a fast-paced environment.


  • Learns the overall business in detail and becomes embedded in the sales and procurement functions as a trusted partner who learns to speak their language
  • Collaborates with those functions to understand short and longer-term transactional goals pertaining to Zebra’s sales strategies and procurement dynamics
  • Advises deal structures to optimize benefit and minimize risk
  • Drafts contracts of varying complexity, including contracts for which no templates exist and that require significant creativity, with high energy and passion against opposing counsel
  • As required, reviews contracts submitted, modifies those contracts, and drives those contracts to closure
  • Advising on the full suite of in-house legal issues (from labor to intellectual property) which may arise from time to time
  • Able to provide counseling regarding enforcement of contract claims against customers, vendors, suppliers and contract interpretation advice with respect to claims made for or against Zebra
  • Provides training, as necessary, to various partners within Zebra on a variety of matters such as contracting principles etc.


  • Graduate (or post graduate) law degree from a recognised educational institution;
  • 6-8 years post qualification experience, preferably through both in-house experience with a MNC and practicing lawyer within an established law firm
  • Prior experience and interest in drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts which include sales, procurement etc;
  • Proficiency in English (and Japanese) both written and spoken, and proficiency in a 3rd language is desired
  • Some experience in the technology sector is preferred – however not crucial
  • Ability to travel internationally, as necessary
